Respect = Fair transfer process, subcontracting protections and a fair discipline process

The District says that every employee should be treated with dignity and respect. During our contract negotiations on April 19, we presented proposals to make sure that these are more than just words.

We discussed positive ways to resolve workplace issues to ensure that we are all treated with respect. We also stood firm on our proposal for protections against unjust discipline for Community Representatives and other workers in Unit G. We also discussed the need for a fair transfer process whenever we are moved from our school sites. Finally, we presented proposals to give us stronger protections against the subcontracting of our jobs.

Hello, I’m Tyrone Severe, a Campus Aide at Maya Angelou High School. I’m a member of our SEIU Local 99 Bargaining Team. It’s the first time that I participate in something like this and I decided to take a more active role in my Union because it is up to us to make changes. A good contract is absolutely essential to our futures. We won’t survive without one. This upcoming contract will affect us all and it’s important for all of us to participate. We’re only strong at the bargaining table if we can show the District that we’re strong at our worksites and in our communities.

It was great to see so many of you wearing stickers to show your support. Check out the photos here. We need to keep it up. Our next bargaining session is on May 10. Here are some things you can do today to show the District we stand union strong:

  • Sign a pledge form.
  • If you can, come out to the School Board Meeting on May 9 at 1:00 pm at LAUSD Headquarters. We’ll be speaking out for a strong contract. RSVP to communications@seiu99.org
  • Stay informed by visiting this website often.

I would like to leave you with this statement to think about as we move forward with negotiations: Our people, our contract, our future. It’s all up to us!
